Summary:

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Maintenance & Tooling, the Process Engineer develops and implements the engineering strategy of all Process Engineering, Plant Engineering, Industrial Engineering functions that support the overall strategic direction of the Armstrong Plant. This position will identify, lead, and complete productivity, continuous improvement, lean manufacturing and cost reduction projects in the plant that will provide a competitive advantage.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of any products and capital projects into the Armstrong Plant.
  • Coordinate and manage the installation of new equipment and systems, including the action and control of costs associated with these projects. Supervise the obtaining of cost analysis information for proposed new production, materials or processes, or modifications to existing products, materials or processes.
  • Evaluate and assess the applicability and efficiency of the production methodology, materials, and equipment used in manufacturing. Assess and support procedures and guidelines established for Manufacturing Engineering to execute design changes, implementation of procedures and reference documents, and all responsibilities of Process Engineering.
  • Develop and implement improvements using new technology, industry expertise, corporate and local resources, and/or other means to optimize the manufacturing process, quality, and marketability of the plants products as well as improve the effectiveness of manufacturing operations, lower production costs and improve safety. Keep current on all manufacturing processes in the plant in the areas of safety, quality, cost, capacity and material flow. Monitor and research new technical developments and manufacturing processes for possible application in the plant.
  • Supervise the continual assessment of labor and material standards to maximize production efficiencies and lower variances. Design new and revise existing work flow, work station and material handling methods. Develop and maintain process drawing and document control procedures.
  • Implement quality processes and systems. Work closely with ISP 9001 team and production employees to ensure compliance to ISO 9001 standards.
  • Support and lead programs aimed at improving overall warranty performance from both a cost and unit failure rate perspective.
  • Ensure that capable engineering resources are in place and provide support for the strategic, physical, and tactical implementation at the plant.
  • Champion continuous improvement and cost reduction efforts to constantly improve the process and lower costs.
  • Organize and assign work to utilize skills, ability and experience of available maintenance manpower to the best advantage to obtain the most favorable cost, quality and workmanship, and to prevent interruptions to production schedules.
  • Prepare and submit recommendations for operating budgets, including costs for capital projects, labor, material, equipment, etc.
  • Provide assistance in vendor selection, equipment specification, quotation reviews, negotiation, and contract preparation.
  • Occasional travel to international facilities to coordinate similar efforts and share best practices as needed.

Relationships and Contacts - Supervisory Relationships:

  • Reports to Supervisor, Maintenance & Tooling
  • May be required to supervise technicians and junior analysts
  • Occasionally supervise factory hourly associates assigned to special projects.

Relationships and Contacts - Organization Relationships:

  • Regular contact with Armstrong Production, Engineering, Customer Service, Materials and Distribution, Scheduling and Quality departments.
  • Has regular contact with the Quality, Engineering, and Manufacturing Support Plastics Departments
  • Frequent contact with Engineering Clerk, as some responsibilities are shared.
  • Frequent contact with Maintenance and Tooling department.
  • Frequent contact with Mold Building Department.
  • Frequent contact with other manufacturing and technical personnel in all areas of the plant, concerning project interaction.
  • Occasional contact with the Plant Manager and Plant Accounting Department.
  • Occasional contact with Product Engineering, Manufacturing Support Department.
  • Occasional contact with Sales and Marketing, field claims, branch personnel and sales agents, regarding complaints, problem solving and product improvement.

Relationships and Contacts - External Business Relationships:

  • Occasional contacts with vendors to discuss technical information, materials, and equipment applicability and availability of materials, equipment and supplies in connection with method improvement.
  • Occasional contact with outside contractors and consultants.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Undergraduate Degree from an accredited school in a technical engineering
  • 5-7 years of work experience in a fast paced manufacturing environment with Process, Plant, and Industrial engineering.
  • Knowledge and experience in developing and implementing cost reduction and continuous improvement projects, and understanding Lean Manufacturing principles and Quality processes and systems is desired.
  • Previous experience managing a small department in an industrial environment.
  • Experience in the fiberglass or plastics industry a definite asset but not a prerequisite.
