Nature and Scope:
The Aquatic Manager will be an integral part of a dynamic leadership team at a new, state-of-the-art Aquatic and Fitness Centre scheduled to open in Spring 2009. The Mission Recreation Park Aquatic Centre (MRPAC) is a City of Kelowna owned facility that will be operated by the YMCA -YWCA of the Central Okanagan.
MRPAC is a new $44 million, 96,000 square foot community aquatic and fitness centre that features an Olympic size 50 metre swimming pool, a 10,000 square foot fitness centre and the largest indoor water park in Canada including a wave pool, river run, Flowrider, multiple waterslides and a children's water play area (see www.missionrecreationpark.ca).
Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Aquatic Manager will undertake full program and operation responsibility for the Aquatics Department. Prior to the opening of the Facility, the Aquatic Manager will provide hands on leadership to facility start up, including staff recruitment and training, program planning and scheduling, and purchasing of equipment and supplies.
The Aquatic Manager will exercise considerable independent initiative and judgment in fulfilling their duties and in their contact with the public and user groups. Responsibilities include the hiring, training, scheduling and evaluation of staff, the establishment and implementation of safety procedures and programs, budget development and control, and being a supportive team member in the overall delivery of all programs and services. This position will provide direction and supervision to Aquatic Supervisors, Lifeguards and Swim Instructors.
Illustrative Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plans, schedules, promotes and evaluates Aquatic programs and events.
- Recruits, trains, and supervises Aquatic staff.
- Creates staff and facility schedules.
- Submits payroll and completes employee performance appraisals.
- Ensures the operation of a safe aquatic environment.
- Establishes and maintains communication and record keeping systems.
- Ensures administrative systems are developed and in place.
- Develops all facility emergency and safety procedures, and ensures the effective implementation of the procedures.
- Develops all safety orientation protocols and manuals for all facility staff.
- Works with the Association's Marketing Department in the promotion of aquatics programs and facilities.
- Acts a liaison between the Facility and user groups to ensure the efficient and effective organization of meets and tournaments.
- Completes community and user need analysis as appropriate.
- Resolves major issues which require interpretation of policies and procedures.
- Develops aquatic department annual goals & business plan with manager.
- Participates in the facility's budget development and is responsible for the expenditures and revenues of the aquatics department.
- Ensures effective use of public resources by optimizing program enrolment and facility use.
- Provides leadership in promoting friendly and positive relationships with all clientele, and in striving towards excellence in customer service.
- Keeps the General Manager informed of all activities and may act for the General Manager in their absence.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities on the Job
- A thorough knowledge of the planning, promotion, implementation and evaluation of aquatic programs and facilities.
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the provisions and requirements of the statutes, bylaws, and regulations affecting the Facility.
- Good leadership and organizational skills.
- Ability to supervise, direct, motivate and encourage staff to build and sustain a positive team environment.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively resolve conflict.
- Enthusiasm, energy, interpersonal and organizational skills necessary to develop and maintain a positive working environment.
- Ability to work a variety of shifts, including days, afternoon, evenings, weekday and weekends as required for operational requirements.
- Excellent interpersonal, supervisory, leadership, customer service and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, monitor and forecast budget requirements.
- Ability to maintain records and compile brief reports.
- Functions effectively both independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Ability to prioritize, organize and multi-task to meet deadlines and program requirements.
- Computer skills include Microsoft Word, Excel and CLASS.
Requirements
- University Degree in Recreation, Leisure Studies or related field, with four years experience in aquatic facility management, programming, and staff supervision or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's License.
- Clean criminal record check.
- Current NLS Pool Option.
- Current NLS Water Park Option (or the ability to obtain certification within 3 months of start date).
- Current CPR C and Standard First Aid.
- Any 3 of the following: NLS IT, LSI IT, WSI IT, First Aid Instructor, AED Instructor, YMCA Canada Aquatic Certifications, YMCA Canada Aquatic Trainer and BCRPA Fitness Leader certification.
Compensation
- Final Compensation will depend on the successful candidate's background and experience. Salary: $70,000 per year, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
